Perceptual discrimination of computer generated and photographic faces

چکیده
Modern day computer graphics are capable of generating highly photorealistic images resulting in challenging legal situations. For example, as a result of a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, computer generated child pornography is protected speech, while pornographic photographs depicting an actual child remains illegal. The ability to distinguish between protected and illegal material assumes that law enforcement agents, attorneys, jurors, and judges can reliably distinguish between computer generated and photographic imagery. We describe a series of psychophysical experiments that used images of varying resolution, JPEG compression, and color to explore the ability of observers to distinguish computer generated from photographic images of people. The results allow us to assign a probability that an image that is judged to be a photograph is, in fact, a photograph.

Categorical Perception of Morphed Facial Expressions
Using computer-generated line-drawings, Etcoff and Magee (1992) found evidence of categorical perception of facial expressions. We report four experiments that replicated and extended Etcoff and Magee’s findings with photographic-quality stimuli. Experiments 1 and 2 measured identification of the individual stimuli falling along particular expression continua (e.g. from happiness to sadness) an...
متن کاملDiscrimination of Computer Generated versus Natural Human Faces
The development of computer graphics technologies has been bringing realism to computer generated multimedia data, e.g., scenes, human characters and other objects, making them achieve a very high quality level. However, these synthetic objects may be used to create situations which may not be present in real world, hence raising the demand of having advance tools for differentiating between re...
متن کاملViewpoint invariance in the discrimination of upright and inverted faces
Current models of face processing support an orientation-dependent expert face processing mechanism. However, even when upright, faces are encountered from different viewpoints, across which a face processing system must be able to generalize. Different computational models have generated competing predictions of how viewpoint variation might affect the perception of upright versus inverted fac...
متن کاملHow Well Do Computer-Generated Faces Tap Face Expertise?
The use of computer-generated (CG) stimuli in face processing research is proliferating due to the ease with which faces can be generated, standardised and manipulated. However there has been surprisingly little research into whether CG faces are processed in the same way as photographs of real faces. The present study assessed how well CG faces tap face identity expertise by investigating whet...
متن کاملAtypical Social Judgment and Sensitivity to Perceptual Cues in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Evaluation of faces is an important dimension of social relationships. A degraded sensitivity to facial perceptual cues might contribute to atypical social interactions in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The current study investigated whether face based social judgment is atypical in ASD and if so, whether it could be related to a degraded sensitivity to facial perceptual cues. Individuals with...
